Chattanooga Football Club announced today that Juan Hernandez Mendizabal is the first player to commit for the local club’s historic 2019 season. Hernandez also coaches on the boys side for CFC Academy.

“Whether I was the first one or the last one, I’m just thankful this is happening,” said Hernandez about his return as the club prepares for the Founders Cup in 2019. “Going to the next level is something that I’ve been thinking about and dreaming about.”

Hernandez first played with Chattanooga FC in 2015, where he helped guide the team to the NPSL National Championship match against NY Cosmos, which set a NPSL attendance record (18,227). He has been a critical member of three NPSL Southeast Conference Championships (2015-16, 2018), two NPSL South Region Championships (2015-16), an NPSL National Final (2015) and a US Amateur National Championship (2015). Additionally, Hernandez earned All NPSL (2016) and All Conference XI (2018) honors.

“Juan embodies all the characteristics we look for in our players at Chattanooga Football Club,” said Sheldon Grizzle, GM for Chattanooga FC. ”He cares deeply about our community, has a great work ethic, takes leadership seriously on and off the field, and performs week in and week out for the team. Our organization couldn’t be happier that he will be manning the midfield for us again as we begin a new chapter in Chattanooga Football Club's history.”

The 28-year-old Hernandez hails from Madrid, Spain, but now calls Chattanooga his home. He graduated from Bethel University in 2014, coached soccer at the University of West Florida for three years, and is currently on the coaching staff at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy. Hernandez’s signature long blond hair, deft skill on the ball in the midfield, and good-natured spirit has made him a fan favorite in Chattanooga.

“I’m humbled, it feels great,” said Hernandez. “I’m going to be playing for CFC so I’m excited about it.”
